Grammy Awards Snubs Artists

Thursday, December 3, 2009

No surprise that Beyonce and Taylor Swift bagged the most nominations in the upcoming 52nd Grammy Awards with 10 and 8 nominations respectively. But the real buzz is with the artists who were snubbed by the Grammy Awards.

Starting off with Kanye West. Though still nominated in other categories, Kanye West's recent album “808s & Heartbreak” was not nominated for Album of the Year in which his first three albums were all nominated for. His smash hit “Heartless” which was covered by The Fray and Kris Allen, thus boosting its profile, was also passed over for Record of the Year. Looks like Kanye West’s impolite and hugely criticized gesture towards Taylor Swift during the Video Music Awards is somewhat taking a toll on the guy's eligibility for awards. Maybe manners do count even for a music award. Well, manners should always count for whatever it is in question.

Also snubbed by the Grammy Awards is comeback diva Whitney Houston who failed to get a nomination for Best R&B Album, “I Look To You”. Well, the once unchallenged woman-with-the-best-voice is nowhere near her prime now. Smoking, drinking and drugs greatly affected her voice making it more raspy and not as whole as it was before. She also seems to be always out of breath when singing nowadays. Her recovery from substance abuse is inspiring but her not being nominated is quite understandable. For all the young artists, learn from Whitney Houston.

Others who also failed to get nominated are Bruce Springsteen with his album Working on a Dream for Best Rock Album and Diana Krall with her album Quiet Nights for best Jazz Vocal Album.

The eccentric Lady Gaga got nominated for Album of the Year for "The Fame" and Song of the Year for "Poker Face" but is not nominated for Best New Artist as she was ruled ineligible for the said award due to her nomination during the previous Grammy Awards for Best Dance Recording with "Just Dance" which she won.

Last year's American Idol Winner, David Cook, was also surprisingly passed for Best New Artist.
